The Saddlers’ heaviest defeat was a 5-0 hammering by Swindon

Part Two

ALBION’S full record was played 46, won 18, drew 13, lost 15, goals for 52, goals conceded 45, points gained 67 … eight short of a playoff spot.

Their biggest wins were three at 4-0 – over Sheffield United (h), Cardif City (a) and versus Barnsley (h), while their heaviest loss also had a 4-0 scoreline, when losing away at Nottingham Forest.

The former Charlton Athletic and

Huddersfield Town striker Karlan Ahearne-grant top-scored with 18 goals (4 penalties).

Walsall’s full League record was played 46, won 14, drew 12, lost 20, goals scored 47, goals conceded 60, points total 54 … 16 clear of relegation and 23 short of the play-offs.

The Saddlers’ best win was 3-0 at home versus Colchester, while their heaviest defeat was a 5-0

hammering away at Swindon in late February – their worst performance of the season by far. Striker George Miller, on loan from Barnsley, topscored for the Saddlers with 12 goals (in 41 games). Point of interest – shortly after losing seven League games on the bounce, Walsall subsequently sacked manager Matthew Taylor on 15th February, replacing him with Michael Flynn.

In the FA Cup competition, Wolves departed in round 4, beaten by Norwich City 1-0; Albion went out in the 3rd round, ousted by Brighton 2-1 after extra-time following a 1-1 draw, and Walsall went out in round 2, defeated 2-1 at home by Scunthorpe.

In the League Cup (known these days as the Carabao Cup) competition, Wolves were knocked out in the 3rd round by Tottenham who won 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time; Albion, fielding basically their reserve team, suffered a home drubbing at the hands of Arsenal, who romped home 6-0 in round 2.

And Walsall left the competition in the first round, beaten 4-3 on penalties by Doncaster Rovers after a 0-0 draw.

Both Wolves and Walsall also entered the Papa John Trophy. Unfortunately Wolves’ youngsters failed to get out of Group ‘C,’ suffering two defeats in their three games while Walsall progressed into round 2 before losing 2-0 away at Cambridge United.
