Church Sunday’s service at the Abbey Church once again opened with a wellsung introit by the relatively new choir, which continues to grow in confidence under the stewardship of organist and choirmaster Austin Wilkie. Rev Tom Tait led the service. In his children’s address, Mr Tait told of how his friend Bobby learned the wisdom that “every day is a beautiful day” and, whatever the weather, he was still loved by God. A hymn reinforced the message. Bible readings by Ann Richards were from the 2 Corinthians ch 12, v 2-10 and Mark ch 6, v 1-13. They were designed to remind the congregation of Paul’s conversion and the importance of people learning from their surroundings, as well as only boasting about God in terms of what he has done for people. Jesus was rejected by the parishioners when he preached in the Synagogue of Nazareth just because, to use the Scottish expression, ‘they kent his (earthly) fither’. He also told them what they needed to hear rather than what they wanted to hear. Mr Tait’s sermon echoed the theme of the service and stated people should continue to learn and improve using their experiences. Mr Tait said: “The best learning is that which comes into our lives and changes us. It reshapes our inner landscape and at its deepest level is beyond even the intellectual and the cognitive. What the apostle Paul experienced in his encounter we do not know, but it changed his heart and set him on a new path.” The sermon concluded with a reminder that Jesus called the Nazoreans to give up everything and to follow the same vision, and few heeded the words: “Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?” The service concluded with the hymn How Deep the Father’s Love For Us. Organ- ist Austin Wilkie played Pastorale by B Haynes; Andante in G Major and Andante in G. Charity shop The Abbey Church Charity Shop will be open from July 4-16. Donations of small furniture, jewellry, good second hand clothes and any other items would be appreciated. Items can be collected. Junior football Coupar Angus JFC will hold its AGM from 7.30pm on June 28 at the town’s Red House Hotel.
