Pupils gain top skills for work life

Talks arranged at St Stephen’s RC Primary

- Clare Damodaran

Pupils at Blairgowrie’s St Stephen’s RC Primary School enjoyed a number of varied experiences as part of their business and community skills week.

Youngsters were visited by pupils’ parents who spoke to them about their jobs and what they do.

Journalist Elizabeth Quigley, actor George Anton and driving instructor Dave Muir all talked to classes.

Animals from the Therapet service – which visits hospitals, day centres and nursing homes, as well as special needs schools, to provide companionship to animallovers who aren’t able to care for a pet full-time – also visited.

And some children got to work with local businesses and organisations, with one group spending some time with David Cochrane, head chef at Blairgowrie’s Dalmore Inn and Restaurant, and Tayside Contracts.

P5 pupils enjoyed two trips to the Dalmore, where they made ice cream and sticky toffee pudding under David’s expert guidance. They also chatted to waiting staff at the hotel.

David said: “I was delighted to have a team of apprentices for the two days they were with us.

“The children were all very enthusiastic and very well behaved and are a credit to the school.

“This is the second time that we have worked with the school on this initiative and we would welcome them back again next year.”

Pupil Findlay Smith said: “The ice cream we made was awesome and we got some really good tips on cooking and how to be safe in the kitchen.

“We saw how the waiters worked. I think it might be something I might like to do when I’m a bit older.”

Fellow pupil Aidein Chalmers added: “The staff also told us a bit about the history of the building which was really interesting. We learned lots about it.”

Head teacher Simon McKell said: “I would like to thank the Dalmore and all the parents who were able to come to the school for giving up their time to help us with our business and community skills week.

“It is an important part of our delivery for children to gain skills for life learning and work.

“The children have gained from the experience and they will build on these skills that they have been taught both within the school and at home.”
