Taking reins at restaurant
Pupils will run Little’s for an evening
Ten Blairgowrie High School pupils will be taking over a popular restaurant in the town next week as part of the final stage of a ‘sea to plate’ initiative.
The S3 pupils, who are all currently studying hospitality, have also recently visited fish markets in Peterhead, a trawler boat and a fishmongers in Crieff as part of the project.
The project aims to educate young people about sustainable fishing and foster an understanding of the supply chain which enables fish to end up in shops and restaurants.
And having seen the various stages of the process so far, the pupils are now ready to prepare and serve fish for customers in a restaurant.
Restaurateur Willie Little, who runs Little’s in Blairgowrie as well as a fishmongers in Crieff – and who has been a supporter of the project for a number of years – has accompanied the pupils throughout the initiative, and will be guiding them in the final stage of their journey.
Lynn Smith, principal teacher of home economics at Blairgowrie High School, said: “Willie really goes the extra mile with his engagement with the youngsters by allowing them to effectively take over his restaurant for a full day.
“They will prepare food and run with recipes of their own devising and by the end of it all they will have gained a real insight into all the stages involved in getting fish from the sea and on to the plate to eat.
“It would be great to see a full house in the restaurant in support of the pupils. I know the food and the service will be good and up to Little’s usual high standards!”
The pupils will be in Little’s on the Wellmeadow in Blairgowrie on June 15, 6.30pm for 7pm.
The cost is £25 per head for a three course meal with coffee or tea, payable on the night.
