Meigle pour on the pressure but rain forces bowl-out

- Cricket

James Watson and Scott Strachan won the Bowls Despite having Freuchie on the ropes on both match days, rain ensured Meigle endured more Village Cup heartache at the weekend.

Sunday’s clash, rearranged after the weather caused the tie to be called off the previous week, was concluded with a bowl-out which the men from Victory Park ultimately lost 2-1.

Only club stalwart Denis Christie – the only Black and Gold player to take the field on Sunday afternoon to have a winner’s medal in the competition from the club’s last triumph in 1991 – struck in the sport’s version of a penalty shoot-out.

Meigle lost the toss for a second week in a row and were invited to bat again.

Roland Thorne struck 50 to help Meigle post 176 all out.

Freuchie lost an early wicket, with youngster Fergus Barron holding a catch at mid-off from the bowling of the again impressive Alan Neave.

Murray Scott bowled his brisk off-breaks and was posing questions but ultimately the rain fell and the bowl-out ensued.

Skipper Iain Stewart said: “We really felt this was our time but the weather has robbed us and we just have to dust ourselves down and move on and try to be in the next finals day on July 17 in Perth.”

Meigle are awaiting news of the draw for the Three Counties twenty20 cup and are still riding high in the league under the captaincy of Aussie all-rounder Matty Farmer.
