Entries open for preserves contest

- Johnathon Menzies

East Perthshire residents have once again been given the chance to prove they have the recipe for the perfect preserve.

Entries are now being accepted for the second annual Berries and Cherries Jam Competition.

And, following on from feedback given last time around, this year’s competition has been expanded to include two more categories.

There are now three categories – berries and cherries, raspberry, and strawberry – and three classes: home made, artisan and young person.

The artisan class is for jam-makers who use the traditional open pan method, while the young person division is for those under the age of 25 years wishing to create the sweet treat.

In addition to the jam-making, there is also a competition for the best label. Organisers have said simple, artistic, eccentric and unique efforts are all to be encouraged.

Submissions of jam will be judged on their colour, consistency, aroma and flavour.

It’s £3 per jar to enter and the following conditions must be adhered to:

Jars must be either 228ml (8oz) or 378ml (1lb) in size; they must be clean and filled to the brim; labels should list the relevant category and the date the jam was made; recycled metal tops used should be free of lettering or logos and a name and telephone number should be included on the bottom of each jar.

Entries, accompanied by the appropriate fee, can be handed in to the Wellmeadow Cafe on Blairgowrie’s Gas Brae. It is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm.

Alternatively, they can be posted to Sue Cole, Blairgowrie Community Market. Balmacron Famhouse, Meigle, Blairgowrie, PH12 8TD.

The closing date for entries is Thursday, August 25.

There will be a prize for each class winner, as well as a separate accolade for the overall champion.

The results will be announced at the Berries and Cherries Community Market, to be held in Blairgowrie’s Wellmeadow from 10am on Saturday, August 27.

Anyone wishing to be reunited with their jam once it has been sampled is asked to collect their jar from the stall at the market.

The competition is coordinated by Strathmore and the Glens Rural Partnership in collaboration with the Blairgowrie and East Perthshire Love to Eat project. For more information contact Sue Cole on 01828 640763 or email sue@nscdesign.com
