Glenisla ready for big day

- Clare Damodaran

The 147th annual gathering of the Glenisla Highland and Friendly Society takes place on Friday next week at the Haugh at Forter.

The games attracts competitors from all over the world and is renowned as one of the most traditional Highland games.

Piping and dancing competitions will take place, as will the popular heavyweight competition featuring caber tossing and shot put, among other tests of strength.

The tug o’ war, the Mount Blair hill race and children’s races also feature in the packed programme.

Coupar Angus Pipe Band will open the games again this year and will also perform later in the afternoon.

There will be stalls at the event selling hand-crafted and locally produced goods and Glenislabranded products, including Glenisla mugs featuring images from around the glen.

Children’s activities have been planned to raise funds for future gatherings.

And visitors will be invited to enjoy the traditional bar and catering tents.

Games secretary Katy Blair said: “Last year was a great games and we owe a huge thanks for the support we received from those that attended, competed, organised, sponsored and judged.

“The friendly atmosphere, fine weather and well-attended local stalls and children’s activities made for a memorable day.

“We are hoping for a good turnout again this year and have received quite a lot of enquiries already regarding entry for the various competitions, particularly the dancing competitions, including 19 dancers from Canada.

“And, of course, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for good weather.

“The Haugh has had a great deal of work done, removing many tons of sand which were washed out of the river during the storms this winter, but is looking good and ready for the games.”

The games start at 12.30pm, with the dancing competitions getting under way at 2pm. Entrance is £7, U14s and parking are free.

The full programme is available on the website at www. glenislahighlandgames.co.uk and the games also has a Facebook page, which can be found by searching for ‘Glenisla Highland Games’.

Following the games there is a dance at Glenisla Village Hall with music from the John Burns Duo. The fun starts at 9pm, with tickets £5 on the door.
