Climbing champ opens new path network

- Clare Damodaran

Polly Murray, the first Scottish woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, launched a new path network in Kirkmichael on Saturday.

The path network is the result of a two-year project managed by Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust (PKCT) and the Mount Blair Community Development Trust (MBCDT).

The project saw three key circular routes around the village upgraded and way-marked as well as the construction of a fourth path - a new 3.5-mile circular route, the Pitcarmick Loop.

Four new interpretation panels have been installed at key points on the routes to allow visitors to learn about the history, environment and local area.

Andy Barrie, PKCT strategic routes officer, said: “This is an important new path network for the village which will bring new visitors to this area.

“Kirkmichael is a hidden gem right in the heart of Scotland and a key point on the Cateran Trail which is one of Scotland’s Great Trails.”

Polly Murray added:“The routes are a great way for families to enjoy the countryside. Wee kids as young as two have already pulled on their wellies and joined their parents, even on some of the longer routes.”

The project was funded by Awards For All Scotland, Commonwealth Games Active Places Fund 2014, Scottish and Southern Energy Community Fund and Perth and Kinross Council’s Environment Challenge Fund.
