Housing mix at Moyness Park

- Clare Damodaran

Over 135 people attended a public exhibition in Blairgowrie last week where proposals for 71 affordable housing units were unveiled.

Representatives from developers Stewart Milne, Hillcrest Housing Association and Perth and Kinross Council were at the exhibition to discuss the proposals with local residents and interested parties.

Should it get the goahead, the proposed development - which Stewart Milne are calling Moyness Park - would be made up of a mix of one to four-bedroom properties ranging from eight onebedroom cottages to 24 three-bedroom end terrace buildings and six four-bedroom semidetached properties.

Both the developers and Perth and Kinross Council stressed the importance of social and affordable housing, particularly in towns such as Blairgowrie where there was a shortage affordable accommodation.

In a statement issued after the exhibition, John Low, managing director of Stewart Milne Homes, said: “Our proposed plans for Blackthorn Place in Blairgowrie aim to provide high quality homes to meet the growing demand for social rented housing in the area.

“Last year only 15 homes became available to the 215 applicants, highlighting the increased need for homes locally.

“The proposals will bring a high standard of one to four bedroom homes ranging from flats and terraced homes to detached and semidetached properties that will help to meet the varied needs of those looking for a home.

“It is our intention to deliver another successful development in Perthshire for local residents and we look forward to working alongside Hillcrest Housing Association with the support of Perth and Kinross Council.”

A spokesperson for the local authority added: “Officers from Perth and Kinross Council attended a consultation event at Blairgowrie Community Campus last week to commence discussions with local residents about the housing development planned for Blackthron Place.

“Due to a fall in market demand from prospective owners the site has been stalled for a number of years.

“The council, in partnership with Hillcrest Housing Association, recognise that demand for more affordable housing remains very high in Blairgowrie.

“The council respects the views held by some members of the community and will take in to account the concerns raised and are committed to further consultation on this proposed development.

“We remain fully committed to addressing the housing need in Blairgowrie providing much needed affordable housing within sustainable communities.”
