Cool prizes snapped up in AYP fundraiser

Two hand-crafted wooden sledges won in top raffle

- Clare Damodaran

The winners of two custom built, handmade wooden sledges have been announced by Alyth Youth Partnership.

Angie Bruce and Ruth Brown, both of Alyth, were the lucky winners of the items, which were donated to the local youth organisation by retired carpenter Gordon Suttie to help them raise valuable funds.

Gordon explained: “I had made some sledges for my grandchildren and great-great nieces and nephews and then thought that George Annan does such a good job and is always fundraising for AYP so I could donate a sledge to them as well to raffle.

“And then the raffle was so well supported that I decided to donate a second sledge so that two people would be able to win!

“I have also donated sledges to Alyth Parish Church and to St Luan’s.

“Each one takes weeks to make and I have made around 18 so far.

“We just need some good snow now!”

George Annan, youth worker at AYP, is very grateful to Gordon.

He said: “On behalf of AYP, I would like to thank Gordon for his generosity.

“Aside from raising funds for the group, the sledge and the raffle has been a talking point and brought people into the Hub which is great.

“And now we have seen Gordon’s handiwork we may well call on his services again for future projects!”

The prize draw for the handcrafted sledges raised over £200 for AYP, which will go towards the costs of outings and activities for the group over the coming months, in particular swimming trips to Dundee and visits to the skate park.

As well as the sledge, there were a number of runner-up prizes up for grabs in the draw, including a bottle of whisky, which was won by Dawn Arthur from Alyth, wine, and chocolate.

George added: “We are delighted to have raised so much money from the raffle and are very grateful to Gordon and everyone else who donated prizes and bought tickets. The support we have had in the community, particularly over the last six months, has been amazing.”
