ALYTH BRIDGE PROJECT FINISHED
Replacements are opened by Citizen of the Year, Marie
The Alyth Citizen of The Year, Marie MacDonald, officially marked the completion of the new Alyth footbridges on behalf of the locals.
Marie was joined by representatives from Perth and Kinross Council and the contractors involved with the project, NRS Group, for last Wednesday’s ceremony.
The town’s previous bridges were damaged beyond repair during devastating flooding in the town in July 2015 and have been replaced as part of Alyth’s town centre regeneration work.
Following a consultation and community vote last year, a decision was taken to replace two of the three footbridges.
Construction work got under way in January, with the footbridges were lifted into place in late February.
Follow up work to the bridge decks is planned for May.
Barbara Renton, director of the council’s environment service, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners and contractors for coming together to provide Alyth with their new replacement bridges and also to the local community for their patience while these works were being carried out.”
Alyth Community Council chair Amanda Blakeman commented: “The bridges look very nice and we are very pleased with them. They are of a high standard and enhance the views of the town.
“The bridges were a significant loss to the town and there was a lot of consultation about the replacements.
“It would have been nice for the community council to have been invited to the ceremony and to have been able to invite the local community along to celebrate what is a landmark occasion.”
