Tree-mendous celebration as SWI marks centenary
Members of the SWI’s Blairgowrie group planted a tree at Coronation Corner in the town on Saturday to mark the centenary of the organisation.
Despite the wet weather, there was a good turnout for the ceremony, which was followed by refreshments in the Wellmeadow Cafe.
As well as members of the SWI, the tree planting was also attended by representatives from Blair in Bloom, who are currently raising funds to refurbish Coronation Corner.
The tree was planted by Muriel Brown, chair of the Blairgowrie Group, and Linda Retson from Rattray who has recently been appointed as the national chair of the SWI.
Thanking everyone for coming along, Muriel said: “Two years ago, following a fundraiser by the group, it was agreed that we would like to plant a tree in the town to commemorate the centenery of the SWI.
“Following discussions with our members and with guidance from Blair in Bloom and Ben McIntyre from Moyness Nurseries in the town we chose this lovely rowan tree.
“There is a saying that‘he who plants a tree plants hope’.
“Well, we hope that this tree will be here for a very long time to come and that our wonderful organisation, the SWI, will go from strength to strength over the next 100 years.”
Linda Retson commented:“It is such an hounour to be here for my first event as national chair.
“I joined Rattray and District SWRI as it was then when I was 22 and I have enjoyed every minute since.
“The SWI is open to all ages and has something to offer everyone.
“IIt is a great opportunity to meet with people and share fun, friendship and skills.”
And Helen McCann from Blair in Bloom added:“We are delighted to be involved in the SWI celebrations and so pleased that they have chosen to plant their tree in Coronation Corner.
“The tree is very bee friendly and it all contributes to our work on the refurbishment of the corner.”
