Thank you to all for 2017 Yomp success

Blairgowrie Advertiser - - INTIMATIONS - Dear Editor Bob Ellis, Blairgowrie

In my opinion the 2017 Cateran Yomp was the best yet.

This was my fifth Yomp and I now have two gold, one silver and two bronze and have set my sights on another silver next year.

But this annual event would not be able to go ahead without the many volunteers who this year braved the rain, which was quite relentless at times.

At each water stop and check point the volunteers had a smile, enjoyed a bit of banter and gave encouragement to each of the participants. This kind action is what kept many going and they all need to be thanked. As I passed each of them, I noted that they were all ages, some as young as 14 and some well into maturity.

The whole organisation of the event was faultless from start to finish and Andrew Hastings and his team at True Grit Events have to be thanked. Also Steve Oatley and Louisa Orford and the ABF Soldiers Charity once again made sure that registration went smoothly.

The route was under water or two inches deep in mud in many places but the participants carried on in order to achieve their goal.

Local path group, BRAN, had played their part in making sure that some of the trail had been cut and more directional posts were in place.

A last minute diversion had to be put in at Auchintaple Loch as timber work had made the track very difficult. But here Andy Barrie of Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust, which manages the Cateran Trail sorted out the diversion. PKCT also toured the route and assisted with helping participants who didn’t have their own support.

So it was without doubt a great success and the new start and finish at Bogle’s Field was well laid out and a perfect venue, so thanks to the Blair Oliphants for allowing the event on their land. I am not sure though whether the participants welcomed the very steep start once they had crossed the Dunkeld Road!

It has been said to me that we in Blairgowrie should possibly do a bit more in welcoming the Yomp and Yompers - this is something that I would agree with and I will look into it for next year.

But in the meantime once more can I thank everyone from the volunteers, the sponsors, the many organisations who made the event possible and to the participants for a great event and hopefully see you again next year.

Huge effort Everyone played their part in the success of the 2017 Cateran Yomp
