Meigle 2nd XI travelled to Lochlands on Sunday in S&PCU Division 2 Central to play Arbroath Utd 3rd XI.

Key man Uddy Reddy was out early, however a class showing from the supremely fit strokeplayer Warren Sutherland saw him score 61, including a massive six that nearly went through the pavilion window.

The ex-Blairgowrie, Coupar Angus, Gordonians and Perthshire batsman had a 60 run stand with Ross McDonald who amassed 37, the villagers’ reserves ending on a competitive if not unassailable 180/9 from 40 overs.

Quick wickets from Prasanrh Reddy, bowling with some genuine briskness to his medium pace, saw the talented Ben O’Mara have to knuckle down and a 50 run partnership with his skipper saw the Smokies always above or on the required run rate.

Two outstanding run outs from McDonald and Prasanth put the hosts on the back foot but Jon Burnett’s gritty half century kept the Angus men in the hunt.

Two wickets from Meigle skipper Bobby Edington turned the momentum the Black and Golds’ way. A sharp stumping from Sutherland off South African all rounder McDonald got rid of the danger man and the win sees Meigle top the table at the midway point of the season for the development leagues.

The 2nd XI are next expected to be in action on Tuesday, July 4 against Stoneywood/Dyce XI in the 2 Counties Cup semi final.

This will be at a neutral venue, either Lochside, Forfar or a return to Lochlands, Arbroath.
