Kirsty’s big plan to support mums

Blairgowrie woman has a great new business plan

A Blairgowrie woman’s dream of creating exciting clothing for new mums has turned into a growing underwear business.

Kirsty Lunn was front and centre this week at the official launch of Molke, a firm which makes fashionable bras and pants for breastfeeding mums.

Based at Perth Aerodrome, the company started out with Kirsty making fashionable items to inspire mums, sitting at home with a sewing machine.

But interest in the line was so great she sought guidance from groups such as Growbiz and Business Gateway to make it a fully fledged firm.

The sole trader company stepped into a limited business yesterday with Kirsty (38) and business partner, director Ros Marshall (36) of Perth, heading up a team at the Scone site.

Kirsty, who studied fine arts at Aberdeen University, explained: “When I had my first child I realised there wasn’t much around for mums who were breastfeeding for them to look good and feel good.

“I bought a sewing machine and started making my own. I wanted the clothes to be fashionable, but also to be another level of support for mums.

“My first child was six years ago and it’s taken since then and it’s not been easy.

“But for me it’s good for mums, because the heart of that is supporting mums.

“It’s also good for jobs, as we employ local people, and we’re working on bringing back this type of industry to Scotland.”

After impressing a growing number of people with her designs, Kirsty stepped up the business and it has now reached customers on an international level, particularly in Australia and New Zealand.

The firm also benefited from crowdfunding which helped to shift its work to meet the rising demand.

Kirsty added that the company name was loosely based around how a child might pronounce milk if asking for it.

She added: “That’s kind of one side of it, but the name also stands out and doesn’t tie us to a particular thing.”

Provost Dennis Melloy was at the official launch event on Monday morning and was happy to show his support for the company.
