Abbey Church Sunday’s Remembrance Day service was conducted by Rev Andrew Graham, who also did the readings from Micah ch 4, vv 1-5 and Mark ch 12, vv 38-44. Calum Patterson played Flowers of the Forest. Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Abbey Church, Perth and Kinross Council and Coupar Angus and Bendochy Community Council at the church plaque commemorating 76 servicemen from the community who died during the two world wars. Rev Graham referred to the reading from Mark’s Gospel and drew a parallel between the widow’s offering, which represented all she had, and the total sacrifice made by those who gave their lives in war to ensure the freedoms we enjoy today. In his sermon he referred to the reading from Micah that outlined a utopia whereby in establishing God’s kingdom there would be no more war between the nations. However, until this happens civil strife and war will continue. Rev Graham spoke of the many conflicts in the world today and of the scourge of terrorism that affects so many innocent people. The despair we may feel at the state of current world events should be offset by the hope contained in the message of Jesus’ teachings and God’s love for our world. We must never forget the sacrifice of previous generations and of the present generation of serving personnel who work on our behalf to maintain peace. Austin Wilkie, organist, played ‘Nimrod’ from ‘The Enigma Variations’ by Elgar, ‘Ave Maria’ by Schubert and ‘Trumpet Tune and Air’ by Purcell.
