\Alyth
Parish Church During term time the Sunday school welcomes children to the front pews of the church. A creche for under-threes is available during the Sunday morning service. The prayer group meets on Thursdays in Burnside Court lounge at 10.30am. Choir rehearsal is every Friday at 6.45pm. The church website at www. alythparishchurch.org.uk is updated weekly and contains details of the Family History Project, kirk news and lots of photos. Family History Alyth Family History Project is closed until Easter. Genealogy enquiries are welcome by email on fhp@alythparishchurch.org.uk or through the project’s Facebook page. Literary Society The first meeting of the Alyth Literary Society in 2018 will take place on Tuesday, January 16, in the Ogilvy Rooms, when members of the Alyth Show committee will present a history of the Alyth Show. The next meeting, on February 6 at 7pm, is the AGM. This will be followed by an illustrated talk on the RNLI at Broughty Ferry by Murray Brown. Pipe Band Alyth and District Pipe Band practice on Wednesdays from 6pm in Alyth Town Hall. For more information contact Elaine Sturrock on 01828 640312 or email elaine@ alythpipeband.org. The band is on the lookout for a lead tip, drummers and pipers of all abilities with the intention of entering competitions for 2018 season. The lead tip will be expected to teach the learners. Knit and Natter The next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 17. The group meets in Clunie Hall on the third Wednesday of every month from 2-4pm. Whist The next whist in Clunie Hall is on Friday, January 12 at 7.30pm.

Abbey Church Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Andy Graham and the readings were by Robert Farquharson, from Isaiah ch 60, vv 1-6 and Matthew ch 2, vv 1-12. Rev Graham spoke about the fear of darkness that many of us experience. He also spoke of Epiphany that is associated with the visit by the Magi to worship Jesus, who was to become the light of the world. In his teachings Jesus showed us how, by having him at the centre of our lives, he can dispel the darkness. Austin Wilkie, organist, played ‘Epiphany Prelude, How Brightly Shines the Morning Star’ by Max Reger, ‘Andante in C Major’ by WJ Westbrook and ‘Short Prelude and Fugue in C’ by JS Bach. Rev Graham will be on annual leave from January 8 to January 16, inclusive. Rev Harry Mowbray will provide pastoral care if you require the services of a minister. He can be contacted on 01250 872146. Rosemary Patterson will be conducting services at Bendochy and the Abbey Church on January 14. The Abbey kirk session will meet on Wednesday, January 17, at 7.30pm in the Church. Any items for the agenda should be sent to the moderator or clerk before the meeting. The children’s ministry will resume on Thursday, January 11. Organisers thank everyone who helps to set up for the groups. Anyone who wants to give a half-hour on Monday mornings or Thursday evenings can speak to Donna Hindmarch for Mondays and Irene Henderson for Thursdays. The prayer group will meet on Wednesday, January 24, at 2pm at the Abbey. The Bible study group will meet on Wednesday, January 24, at 7.15pm in the Abbey. The next Friendly Friday will be on February 2 from 1.30pm to 3pm in the Abbey. The Sunday service at the Abbey is from 11.15am to 12.15pm.
