Cricket action is possible
Meigle Cricket Club and other clubs around the country may yet see some action this summer.
After First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement on Thursday that the country has now moved into phase two of the Scottish Government’s‘route map’out of the coronavirus lockdown, Cricket Scotland’s CEO Gus MacKay confirmed training can restart from Monday, June 29.
Any action will be subject to various conditions which were still in the process of being finalised as the Blairie went to press on Monday this week.
However, in England, the rules have centred on ensuring social distancing is adhered to, having a restricted number of players in and around nets and having an allocated time for smaller training sessions in groups.
MacKay, who represented Zimbabwe in his playing days, said: “With cricket activity currently suspended until July 1, we are bringing this forward to restart initial activity from June 29 in accordance with the Scottish Government announcement that clubs may open all outdoor sports areas and pitches.
“We are committed to working closely with the Scottish Government, sportscotland and other sports governing bodies to ensure the safe return of cricket.
“The health and safety of all those involved in the game remains our priority.”
A date for when matches can resume has yet to be confirmed.
However, it has previously been intimated this will not be before August 1.
Meigle CC is one of many clubs which has stated it can host games well into September.
A spokesperson for the Black and Golds said:“In recent years September has become a month of less and less meaningful cricket, much to the chagrin of many who wish to see the game grow – given the month’s generally reasonable weather patterns.”
