- CLARE DAMODARAN

Senior firefighters have reassured Alyth residents that emergency cover is still being provided after several crew members were forced to selfisolate in connection with positive Covid-19 tests.

Two of the east Perthshire town’s retained firefighters tested positive for coronavirus recently and a further five crew members were also asked to go into isolation inline with government guidelines.

In total, 11 personnel are based at Alyth Fire Station.

Local Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) senior officer Gordon Pryde said: “We can confirm that there have been two positive Covid-19 tests of personnel based at Alyth Fire Station and, as a result, an additional five members of the station are self-isolating in line with instructions from the NHS Test and Protect scheme.

“We are offering them our fullest support during this time.

“SFRS has robust arrangements in place for any staff experiencing Covid-19 symptoms and we are continuing to monitor this situation and follow guidance set out by Health Protection

“We would like to reassure the community that their safety is our highest priority and that emergency cover is being maintained across the area.”

Perth and Kinross Provost Dennis Melloy is a councillor for the Strathmore ward and lives on the outskirts of Alyth.

The Conservative elected member said:“Watching television in the comfort of our own homes witnessing the dreadful news of families grieving for loved ones, no-one ever thinks it is going to happen to you.

“In Alyth over 20 cases of this dreadful pandemic have been reported and, in Coupar Angus, the 2 Sisters Food Group processing plant has over 30 positive tests.

“I urge everyone to follow the government guidelines to stay at home, wash your hands, wear masks and don’t mix in groups.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our local community groups throughout Strathmore who work tirelessly to support their communities during this difficult time.”

Alyth is one of six areas in Perth and Kinross which recently recorded a Covid infection rate of over 400 cases per 100,000 people.

The infection rate in the wider Perth and Kinross region rose above 250 per 100,000 up until Sunday, January 3, after nearly doubling in the space of seven days.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said that the government will enforce legal‘stay-at-home’laws and that people are only permitted to go outdoors to fulfil caring duties, for essential shopping, exercise or to visit an extended household.

Schools have also returned to remote learning following the festive break.

The latest figures available show that four pupils and three members of staff at Alyth Primary School had tested positive for Covid-19 in the period from December 23 to January 5 and that 33 pupils and three members of staff were self-isolating as a result.
