CELEBRATIONS ARE ON HOLD

COVID RESTRICTIONS FORCE CLUB INTO RETHINK Rattray Bowling Club will honour its centenary next year

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

Plans to mark a significant milestone at an east Perthshire sports club have been put on hold.

Rattray Bowling Club recently announced events set to be held to mark its centenary this year have been deferred until 2022.

The decision was taken recently by the committee and announced to members.

It comes as restrictions in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic are likely to pose problems in terms of planning events over the course of the coming season.

Posting on the club’s Facebook page, a Rattray Bowling Club spokesperson said: “As you know we were unable to hold our AGM [but] we will monitor the Covid rules relaxation and inform the members accordingly as to when we can safely hold this meeting. In the interim, the current post holders will continue in their roles.

“Following the implications of Covid social distancing and the likelihood that the bowling club’s activities will be adversely affected once again this year, we have made a few changes – one of which is to defer our centenary celebrations until 2022.

“The other is to waive membership fees to all the members who paid the full amount for 2020, and half the fee for any remaining members who rejoin.”

In relation to action getting under way on the Middle Road green, the spokesperson added: “Friendly fixtures will go ahead, albeit maybe without catering etc.

“Club competitions will also go ahead with sufficient entries, external district and national organisations are also fully committed to delivering all their competitions and leagues etc, probably with some restrictions.

“Start dates for the commencement of bowling, access to the club and what facilities we are allowed to use will all be confirmed when the details of the Covid relaxation periods for sport have been confirmed by the government and conveyed to the clubs by Bowls Scotland.

“Whilst the experiences on and off the green won’t be as normal as we would all like, we are still looking forward to welcoming back all our members. Hopefully this will include visitors and friends as the year unfolds.

“Please be assured that our priority will be ensuring the safety of all our members.” The club confirmed that committee member Cathy Kinnear has been appointed as Rattray’s designated Covid officer in line with Bowls Scotland guidance.
