Tributes from Perth and Kinross have been paid to the Duke of Edinburgh, who has died at the ago of 99.

Buckingham Palace announced the death of the duke, who was awarded the freedom of Perth nine years ago, on Friday last week.

Prince Philip was the longest-serving consort in British history. He married the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947 and she became queen in 1952.

He had visited Perthshire several times, notably in 2012 when the Queen celebrated her diamond jubilee.

It was in that year he was awarded the freedom of Perth.

Provost of Perth and Kinross and local councillor for the Strathmore ward, Dennis Melloy, said: “The Duke of Edinburgh has always played a prominent role in the life of this nation. Scotland has always been close to his heart, no more so than here in Perth and Kinross.

“In 2012 we had the great pleasure of welcoming the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to Perth as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations, when His Royal Highness was awarded the freedom of the city of Perth.

“The visit by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh was especially valued in the year that Perth became a city again. The excited crowds who lined the streets to greet the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh showed just how much their visit meant to so many people.

“Our heartfelt sympathy and support go out to the Queen and the royal family at this sad time.”

Deputy First Minister of Scotland, John Swinney, also paid his respects.

He said: “Prince Philip dedicated himself to service and has been a mainstay in public life for generations.

“Like millions across the country, I am deeply saddened by his passing.

“My thoughts at this time are with the Duke of Edinburgh’s family. I hope that the outpouring of support and affection from the public will offer them some comfort during this difficult period.”

A link to the national digital book of condolence has been posted on the Perth and Kinross Council website.
