Bowls ready for opener

-

Final preparations are being made ahead of the opening of the green at Rattray Bowling Club ahead of the new season.

President Mike Offen will welcome members to the Middle Road club from 2pm on Saturday, May 1.

The opening is slightly later this year because of a delay in carrying out spring treatment to the playing surface due to the bad weather.

Anyone interested in heading along is asked contact the club in advance as booking is required in order to be in line with Covid-19 restrictions.

In a statement posted on the club’s Facebook page, a club spokesperson – who paid tribute to the sterling efforts of green curator Gordon Whyte – said:“The good news is that the committee is now very optimistic that we will be able to hold internal competitions this year and, possibly, external competitions in the latter part of the summer.

“The intention is to hold internal singles, pairs and, possibly, triples’leagues to run throughout the season and we would urge any member who wishes to participate in any of these competitions to come along to the opening to register their interest.”

Existing office-bearers and committee members will remain in place until this year’s AGM.

The club has also said bar opening times will be in line with Scottish Government guidelines.

The spokesperson continued:“This means that initially our bar area will be open from Saturday, May 1, on Saturdays and Sundays from 1.30pm to 9pm for alcohol sales outdoors and non-alcohol sales indoors.

“These will be extended as the season progresses and guidelines allow.”
