Zahid helped put Meigle in control

Knock of 59 helps team to a comfortable victory

- SPORTS REPORTER

Victory Park looked in great condition as the good weekend weather continued and Meigle welcomed Falkland for the final of the Village Cup Scottish section on Sunday.

Captain Charles Clark elected to bat after winning the toss as Meigle hoped to put their recent batting woes behind them on a good-looking deck and fast outfield.

However, it wasn’t to be as the top order once again struggled in the face of some tight Falkland bowling.

Too many batsmen got themselves in before losing their wicket as Meigle slid to 60-5.

It was then that the skipper came to the crease to join Zahid Rasheed, looking to continue his fine early season form with the bat.

The pair added 70 in only 10 overs as the innings finally sparked into life.

Clark was the next wicket to fall for 22

before Zahid’s fine knock came to an end for a hard-hitting 59 that included four sixes and seven fours.

Some handy runs were amassed by the Meigle late order as the innings ended on a highly competitive 176-9.

Falkland got their reply off to a solid

start, reaching 30 in the sixth over before Watson was clean-bowled by Zahid.

Zahid continued to make inroads into the top order, bagging himself four wickets to put Meigle firmly in control of the contest.

Only youngster Sloan looked like

threatening the target but he was removed thanks to a great catch on the boundary by Murray Scott off the bowling of Clark for 41.

Clark took another wicket then Alan Neave mopped up the tail, claiming the final four wickets to fall as the visitors were bundled out for 99.

This meant Meigle secured the victory by 77 runs.

They will now progress to the national stages, with the draw to be made this week.
