COUPAR ANGUS ABBEY CHURCH

Rev Andy Graham welcomed the congregation to worship and opened with words from Psalm 27.

He said: “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?”

Esther Jack played the hymn ‘Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation’, while those present reflected on whether Jesus was the foundation of their lives.

The Bible lesson, from Mark ch 4, vv 26-34, was read by the minister.

It was made up of two parables – the Growing Seed and the Mustard Seed.

The latter relates to one of the tiniest seeds which ended up growing into a very big bush.

Jesus always spoke in parables about everyday things so that the gathered crowds might understand His teachings.

This was not always the case, just as people today often struggle to accept what Jesus was trying to say.

Mr Graham said: “As humans we find it hard to understand what we can’t actually see.

“We know that seeds grow if we plant them in soil and water them but we can’t see the inner mechanism causing that growth.

“However, after these parables Jesus always explained fully to his own disciples about the coming of the Kingdom of God.

“It is said that God works in mysterious ways but people are not very accepting of mysteries and would rather things happened in their own timescales.

“They often think God is not listening but, through faith and belief in God, we must trust that he will help us to spread the message of his kingdom just as the early disciples did.

“He knows our capabilities and will help to grow the big bush from the tiniest of seeds.”

Following prayers Esther played ‘How Great Thou Art’.

The service was closed with the benediction.

The Abbey Church Kirk Session will meet on Wednesday, June 23, at 7pm.

The organist was Janet Coyle.
