Outdoor gym work

- CLARE DAMODARAN

Work on the construction of an outside gym finally got under way last week – much to the delight of a group of local residents behind the project.

The Riverside Venture Group is behind the project, which is part of wider plans to revitalise one of Blairgowrie and Rattray’s most important natural assets.

The initiative is the first part of proposals to turn the Ericht riverside area into an “informative, entertaining and first-choice” outdoor leisure activity for local residents and visitors to the town.

The installation of the outdoor gym equipment at the riverside is being managed by Perth and Kinross Council.

The equipment being installed includes a step-box multi-gym, a double leg press, a chest press and a bike.

Brian Smith is one of the founder members of the Riverside Venture Group.

He said: “It’s really exciting to see this work commencing.

“The Riverside Venture Group was first formed nearly five years ago as a result of a community engagement exercise which, among other concerns and desires, highlighted the lack of development along what is a jewel in Blairgowrie’s crown.

“The idea of an outdoor gym was put before the community and, going by comments received, was considered to be a good one so the group put together a proposal and obtained funding to cover the proposed costs.

“Unfortunately, Covid-19 reared its ugly head and along with materials supply difficulties the project has been in limbo for nearly two years.

“Our funders have been very patient and have allowed us to extend the project finish time and we are very grateful for that.”

Mr Smith went on to explain that, of the six pieces of equipment being installed, two are temporary having been supplied as substitutes for what was originally asked for.

The originally requested items will be delivered to the site when available and will replace the temporary equipment.

Installation work is expected to be complete this week but it will be another month or so before the site is suitable for use by the community.

Mr Smith said: “The group hopes that this development will be the first of many along the riverside.

“And, going by conversations held with people asking about the project, the gym equipment will be most welcome and fully utilised.”
