Cup delight for Alyth
Club dedicates final win to duo who passed away
There were celebrations as Alyth won the Marshall Cup on Saturday following a 3-1 away win at Burrelton Rovers.
Both sides went into the tie with a perfect record after notching up five wins from their opening five matches.
The new group set-up for the region’s amateur football cup competitions was formulated after the traditional leagues were suspended and then subsequently declared null and void due to issues associated with the global coronavirus pandemic.
Alyth took the lead through Kane Alison and forged further ahead with a Gary Dobbin effort.
Burrelton pulled one back before Alison scored again to ensure the silverware was secured by the Diamond Jubilee Park side.
Alyth manager Peter Hosie – who has been involved with the club for 30 years both as a player and in the dug-out – dedicated the win to diehard fans Keith Robertson and Bob Lindsay, both of whom passed away earlier this year.
“Everyone at the club wants to dedicate the win to Keith and Bob – they are always in our thoughts and would’ve loved it on Saturday. That win was for them,” he said.
“I’ve just finished my 30th season with the club and days like that make it all worthwhile.
“Alyth is a close-knit town and it’ll hopefully give everyone a wee lift, especially after going through such a rubbish year because of the pandemic.
“I’m very pleased for all the players and proud of them all.
“We didn’t have any expectations going into the season but I thought we’d have a chance if we gave it our all.
“Burrelton have got a good side but we’ve got a good, young, fit team and I’m delighted.”
Elsewhere on the seven-strong group’s final day, Balmoral United beat Wolfhill 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
