Golf event in bid to tee-up cancer charity support

- CLARE DAMODARAN

Four members of Strathmore Golf Centre are taking part in a 72-hole golf challenge at the east Perthshire club on Friday this week to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Mike Easton, Scott Millar and Ronald Leighton, all from Forfar, and Stephen McDiarmid from Meigle, are taking on the 24-mile feat of endurance, with other members of the club’s men’s, ladies and junior sections taking part throughout the challenge in support.

The team, who are calling themselves the ‘Strathie Loons,’ will be taking on four rounds of golf, starting at 5am on July 2 at the club near Alyth and are expected to finish at around 6pm on Friday evening when there will be a small presentation.

All four men have lost close family members to cancer and were keen to do something to raise much-needed funds for Macmillan in a show of gratitude for the valuable services the charity provides to those affected by the disease.

Macmillan Cancer Support provides physical, emotional and financial support for people living with cancer and the Longest Day Golf Challenge is one of many ways people can raise vital funds for the charity.

Strathmore GC member Mark Davidson is helping the team with the organisational aspects of the challenge.

He said: “The guys are looking forward to taking on the Longest Day Golf Challenge.

“They decided to take part in this charity event to raise money for

Macmillan Cancer Support.

“It is a very worthwhile cause that means a lot to them.

“This horrible illness has taken loved ones and friends and affects so many people, so we are asking everyone to dig deep and donate anything they can to help fight this cruel disease.

“So far they have raised more than £750 and we would like to thank everyone who has supported us.”
