Mixed fortunes for Meigle but teen Josh scores first century for club

- SPORTS REPORTER

Sunday was last 16 time in the Voneus Village Cup and Meigle made the lengthy trip to East Yorkshire to play 2019 winners Houghton Main.

After a sunny trip down, the visitors were greeted by a heavy rain shower before the scheduled start of play.

The start was pushed back a bit and a 30-over a match commenced with Meigle losing the toss and being asked to bat.

Form batsman Josh Edington was promoted to opener along with his more experienced counterpart Tom Duff and the pair made a good start, with Duff in particular looking at his fluent best.

They had taken the score to 39 after six overs before Duff was trapped in front for 25.

Meigle then lost two quick wickets as first Alan Neave was bowled and then Majid Rasheed was caught behind from the next delivery.

The star from the previous round, Zahid Rasheed, then entered the game and continued where he had left off from his last innings this side of the border with some early boundaries.

He then lost a bit of timing and, as the runs dried up, he first survived a dropped catch before being claimed following the next ball by the same fielder for 21.

At 80-4 from 17 overs the game was finely poised.

By this point it was the hosts who turned on the pressure with some accurate bowling and, coupled with good field placement, they put a stranglehold on the Meigle middle order and continually chipped away with the odd wicket.

At the other end Josh was continuing his fine form and brought up his 50 with a glorious back foot square drive.

He followed this up with a beautiful straight six over the sight screens that sailed into the adjacent meadow.

Once he departed soon after for a well-compiled 63 from 71 balls the innings spluttered to a halt as Meigle were all out for 132 in the 29th over.

With Meigle being deemed a bit below par at the halfway stage, Houghton Main’s reply got off to a solid start until Zahid Rasheed found a way past the dangerous Law to trap him LBW.

In the next over, brother Majid had Oden bowled playing on to reduce Houghton Main to 17-2 in the fifth over.

The ball was beginning to swing about, probably caused by the moistening air of the approaching overhead thunderclouds which had a very ominous look about them.

Sure enough the heavens then opened spectacularly, emptying a vast amount of rain onto the ground.

The worst of the storm passed but it was followed by persistent heavy rain and with no real prospect of any more play the game was abandoned with the home side 30-2 in the eighth over.

The two sides will try again for a quarter final spot at Victory Park on Sunday this week.

There was better news for Meigle on Thursday last week as the side triumphed in their final T20 group game at home to Strathmore on a glorious evening.

Batting first, opening pair Majid Rasheed and Josh Edington gave Meigle an excellent start and had amassed 99 runs together before Majid was caught behind for 47 which contained 10 fours.

Josh surpassed 50 with a delightful flick off his legs but partners at the other end came and went before he found a willing ally in Uday Reddy.

The pair came together with the score on 136-4 and really put the pressure on their opponents.

In the final stages of the innings Josh notched his maiden Meigle century with a drive for two to wide long-off.

He was to finish on 102 not out from only 66 deliveries, with 15 fours and a six, as Meigle ended their innings on 191-4.

It was an outstanding knock from the sixteen year-old.

In reply, Strathmore lost a wicket in the first over, with Majid bowling Hayden Evans for one at the start of an innings which petered out to 134-8.
