Calum hits right note at new Hub opening

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

A music event held to mark the official opening of a new east Perthshire community facility has been declared a success by organisers.

Singer-songwriter Calum Campbell performed two sets outside Kettins Community Hub on Saturday, July 10, as part of a ‘Gig on a Truck’ tour being organised by Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre.

The performances were the first official events to be held at the Lindsay Park facility, which is the result of a concerted fundraising and planning effort carried out over the last seven years.

A combination of grants and local donations raised the near-£165,000 required to create a building which now boasts a community room, a small kitchen, toilets and new changing rooms.

In addition, external paths have been upgraded and disabled parking facilities have been created.

Russell Miller is chair of the committee behind the new Hub and said 94 people attended the first set, while there were 78 music fans at the second later in the day.

As well as celebrating the opening of the new facility, Kettins Community Council ran a raffle to raise funds for its Seniors’ Christmas Party and local football club Kettins AFC ensured hungry gig-goers were fed with a burger stall.

Russell is chair of the Kettins Parish Hall committee, which has overseen the work.

He said: “Our launch event was a great success. Calum provided some excellent entertainment and the afternoon was well attended

“It was good to see people outside enjoying the sun and the music provided by Calum and the Perth Theatre project.

“There was a bit of work in getting the social distancing arrangements right but, even with these restrictions, everyone enjoyed the event.”

He added: “It did seem strange having a launch event where the only use people could make of the new facility was the toilets.

“However, now that Covid restrictions are reducing, we are starting to plan events for the Hub.”

Mr Miller said anyone interested in using the facility in the future can email their request to kettinshub@ gmail.com
