Top charity total after tough golf challenge

Strathmore thanked

Four members of an east Perthshire golf club took part in a gruelling sporting challenge in aid of a good cause close to their hearts recently.

Mike Easton, Scott Millar and Ronald Leighton, all from Forfar, and Stephen McDiarmid, from Meigle, took on 72 holes at Strathmore Golf Centre near Alyth last month to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Each player clocked-up a total distance of approximately 24 miles following a 5am start and four 18hole rounds on a day which saw them receive support from the club’s men’s, ladies and junior sections, some of whom joined in at various points during the day.

The team, known as the ‘Strathie Loons’, have lost close family members to cancer and were keen to do something to raise muchneeded funds for Macmillan in a show of gratitude for the valuable services the charity provides to those affected by the disease.

Fellow Strathmore GC member Mark Davidson helped the team with the organisational aspects of what was known as the Longest Day Golf Challenge.

A total of £2500 has been raised. Mark described the event as a “fantastic” success and thanked everyone who donated.

He said: “We’d like to thank Strathmore Golf Centre for allowing us to run the event, as well as the ladies’ juniors’ and seniors’ sections for coming out and joining in.

“By the third and fourth rounds there were quite a lot of people out supporting us.

“It was nice to see everyone in the club’s different sections together, especially after not seeing people as much during the Covid period.

“The weather was great as the day wore on, too – although it was a bit like pea soup at the 5am start!

“We’re really pleased with the total and would like to thank everyone who donated – and the Blairie for helping us spread the word.”
