SATURDAY HIGHLIGHTS

All the trade stands, food festival and sideshows return for a second day which features a completely different line up of main ring entertainm­ent, competitio­n classes and special featured events. Why not visit on both days and enjoy the full programme?

LIVESTOCK JUDGING: Over 1,200 head of livestock compete in more than 360 classes and visitors enjoy touring the pens where prime livestock receive their final grooming before taking to the ring. Then watch the expertise of the judges in action. Saturday will commence with the judging of Heavy Horses, Cattle, Sheep,

Goats and Donkeys.

The morning judging is completed with the Supreme Champions in the Heavy Horse, Cattle, Sheep and Goats classes all competing for the coveted Champion of Champions Trophy.

COOKERY DEMONSTRAT­IONS: Another feast of food and fun at the Cookery Theatre as Perthshire On A Plate rolls out the second day’s programme of celebrity and local chefs, led by Jean Christophe Novelli. NATIONAL SHOWS: The Beltex Scotland National Show will be staged at Perth Show 2022. See the very best of this breed of sheep as they assemble at Perth from all across the country.

RIDDEN CLYDESDALE­S: A spectacula­r sight and sound as these equine giants canter round the Perth Show arena to the delight and awe of the crowds. Hear the thunder of their hooves as the heavy horses are put through their paces in this always-popular class.

CARRIAGE DRIVING: A stylish reflection of a bygone era as one or two horses and some donkeys - are hitched to a selection of gigs and carriages for a display of expert driving.

FARRIERS: A rare opportunit­y to see the spectacula­r Scottish Champion farrier team in action.

Marvel at their skill as they work on both an open forge and a gas fire to craft horse shoes from straight metal bars, trim the horses’ hooves and nail the shoes to the feet.

CHILDREN’S RACES: Sign up on the day for a series of fun competitio­ns in the main arena at 1.45pm.

DOG SHOW: A show within a show! A nine-class competitio­n for man’s best friends. Bring along your dog on the day and enter your chosen class at the specially created Dog Show area, ranging from Prettiest Pup to Best Rescue Dog. The Dog Show area will also feature a wide selection of pet-related trade stands.

PET COMPETITIO­N: Another popular crowd pleaser as much loved family pets compete to win favour with judges Provost Xander McDade and Show Chairman’s wife Michelle Mitchell. Everything from reptiles to rodents and budgies to bull calves have shown up in the past so who knows what 2022 will bring! Entry open on the day. SHOWJUMPIN­G: Perth Show 2022 builds on the success of staging showjumpin­g on the Saturday with those magnificen­t animals and their riders clearing what look like impossible heights. Great entertainm­ent and excitement for everyone with riders as young as nine-years-old set the face the challengin­g jumps.

PIG RACING: An exciting “first” for Perth Show which will see these personable little porkers give chase across the jumps on a specially created racetrack.

DUCK TRAIL: Search for 16 coloured rubber ducks placed around the show ground to win a superb Gordon & Durward hamper. Pick up your entry forms at the gates, dog show area and Perth Show office. TOSSING THE SHEAF: Compete for the Golden Pitchfork in this open competitio­n to see who can hurl a sheaf the furthest using a pitchfork.

PERTH & DISTRICT PIPE BAND:

Enjoy the stirring sound of the pipes and drums as the county’s own entertain throughout the day with their skilled rendition of favourites.

GRAND PARADE: One of the finest of its type in the country, the Grand Parade of champions and prizewinne­rs enters the main ring to showcase the finest livestock at this year’s Show. The newly crowned Champion of Champions, followed by the winner of the Perth Quaich, will lead this hugely popular spectacle as the animals step out in a flurry of colourful rosettes to the cheer of the large crowd of well-wishers and supporters.

VINTAGE VEHICLES: The popular display of vintage agricultur­al vehicles and machinery always draws a crowd as it parades around the main arena.

TUG O’WAR: Cheer on your favourites as teams of Young Farmers from the Perthshire District do battle with the weighty rope to pull their contestant­s over the line.

PONY CLUB GAMES: Another great crowd pleaser making a welcome return is the Pony Club Games - heart-stopping dare-devil riding by youngsters on their plucky ponies as they race across the show ground competing in a variety of speed and agility challenges.

LONG SERVICE MEDALS: Saturday at Perth Show traditiona­lly recognises those workers who have dedicated a lifetime to local agricultur­e through the presentati­on of Royal Highland Agricultur­al Society of Scotland Long Service Medals.

This year will see 40-year service medals go to farm workers and tractor men Sandy Baird at Milton of Collace Farm, Burrelton and George Godfrey at Fullerton Farm, Meigle, and stockman Colin Fordyce at Strathisla Farms, Meigle.

TROPHIES: See the magnificen­t array of historic and modern trophies on display destined for the mantelpiec­e of the Show’s champions.
