BLAIR ARE ONTHE BALL

Davie Park side register first win of season

- SPORTS REPORTER

A deadly double in the first half was enough to earn Blairgowrie three East Region Midlands League points last Wednesday night in what was the home team’s first league win of the season. Matty Adam got the party started on six minutes at Davie Park with a header at the near post before experienced attacker Gary Axworthy wasted little time in adding a second. Opponents Forfar United – who had already taken account of Brechin Vics and drawn with Kirrie Thistle – were unable to find a way through after the break, despite having the chance to do so from the penalty spot.

Goalkeeper Cammy Johnstone saved and the east Perthshire men comfortably saw out the victory despite further chances for both sides.

Blairgowrie had received a boost ahead of the midweek match when club captain James Simpson’s red card received versus Kirrie Thistle was rescinded on appeal.

Video evidence convinced the authorities that his challenge near the centre circle did not in fact prevent an obvious goalscoring opportunity and Simpson was cleared to play.

It was something of a hollow victory, however, as his dismissal was followed by Kirrie’s winning goal.

On Saturday, Blairgowrie produced a battling performance to hold a strong Downfield side to a draw at Davie Park.

The home side fell behind three times and each time they equalised.

Downfield took the lead after 15 minutes, with Axworthy equalising 10 minutes later with a beautiful lob.

A penalty saw Downfield go 2–1 ahead after 34 minutes, only for Adam to race through to score an equaliser just a minute later.

The Dundee side took the lead for the third time shortly after half-time, but Axworthy equalised for Blairgowrie with a vicious low free-kick in the 55th minute for 3-3.

With more than a third of the match left, the only surprise was that there was no further scoring.

This Saturday the Davie Park side face a stern test when they entertain Broughty Athletic in the Midlands League.

Kick off is at 2.30pm.

On Wednesday next week, August 17, Blairgowrie travel to Angus to take on Brechin Vics. Kick-off is at the earlier time of 6.45pm.

Last week’s winning Blairgowrie Juniors’ Lottery numbers were 3, 4, 7, and 20.
