Sunshine and smiles at Strathardle Gathering
The sun shone as the 139th Strathardle Highland Gathering and Agricultural Show was celebrated in fine style in Kirkmichael on Saturday.
Scores of people descended on Bannerfield to belatedly mark the 150th anniversary of the inaugural Games in the village – which is thought to have taken place in 1871 – and enjoy the popular event’s return following a three-year gap as a result of Covid-19 restrictions.
The ceremonial march to the main ring was led by chieftain Sir Michael Nairn and members of Coupar Angus Pipe Band.
The Bannerfield Standard was carried by vice-president Graeme Milne, while other committee members carried ceremonial swords.
Sir Michael thanked the volunteer members of the committee for their months of preparation and attention to detail.
He also surprised many of those gathered by announcing his intention to step down from the position of chieftain, a role he has held since 1980, at the conclusion of the day’s activities.
Trophies and awards won in the agricultural and home industries sections were handed over by Petrina Menzies, who was nominated for the role by the committee in recognition of her contribution to the community over many years.
As well as Highland dancing, the afternoon programme of competitions and entertainment included heavyweight events, tug o’ war and races and other activities for children and the young at heart – such as tilt the bucket, bale rolling and musical cars.
Afterwards, committee president Alec Rattray said: “It was great to be back. Our committee and the community have worked very hard to pull together a fantastic day.
“I have had nothing but good vibes and happy faces from everyone, which always makes me feel it’s worth all the effort that goes into setting it up.
“It was a very emotional day for a lot people seeing it all happening once again, and with so many familiar faces coming together just to enjoy the day together.”
