Bridge work start is hailed
Blairgowrie and Glens ward councillor and Bob Brawn has welcomed the start of work to repair the damaged bridge in Bridge of Cally.
Heavy rain and flooding caused part of the picturesque structure to collapse on October 31 last year and a large section of one of the parapets washed away.
Scaffolding to facilitate the repairs has now been installed to allow stonemasons to start work – which is set to cost £80,000 in total – and the road to remain open while the project is carried out.
Cllr Brawn, who lives in the east Perthshire village and close to the site, commented: “I’m extremely pleased to see the repairs started on the bridge which is a listed monument and has been a poor sight since the parapet collapse last October.
“Work is set to be completed by September 30 at latest.
“Everyone has been patient while these works have been prepared, having to put up with the various delays caused by the traffic light system.
“Although much of the original stonework has been lost in the river, I’m hopeful that the replacement stones will go some way to matching the original, particularly after some weathering.
“I’d like to thank officers for their work in organising this complex project which involves some major planning and which has ensured that traffic can continue to flow thus avoiding any unwanted diversions.”
