COUPAR ANGUS ABBEY CHURCH

Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Hugh Ormiston.

Bible readings from Exodus ch 3, vv 13-17, Hebrews ch 11, vv 20-28 and Luke

ch 7, vv 1-10 were read by Ellen McGibbon.

For his sermon Mr Ormiston referred to the reading from the gospel of Luke, which tells of a Roman centurion whose servant was ill.

The centurion asked Jesus for help in healing the man.

In general, the Romans were quietly supportive of the different religions as long as peace was maintained.

Luke tells of how this man loved the Jewish nation and had built a synagogue.

He had listened to Jesus before and he believed that his servant would be healed.

In fact, Jesus himself said: “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.”

Mr Ormiston went on to explain that

faith is fundamental to Christian lives.

It is not intellectual or emotional, primarily it is practical.

He said his own journey in post-war times was a very practical ministry.

People were looking for change and came to church, not always in a fancy building, looking for that help to know Jesus.

Mr Ormiston said that faith is based on knowing Jesus, who was Himself a practical person, and putting that faith to practical use in our local community.

Following the final hymn, “O Lord our God when I in awesome wonder’, the service was closed with the benediction and organist Alison Malcolm played ‘Trumpet Tune’ by David N Johnson.

Sunday’s service at the Abbey Church is from 11.15am and all are welcome.
