Call for help to spark up fireworks display

Community council reiterates plea after getting no response to initial appeal for volunteers back in May

- CLARE DAMODARAN

Blairgowrie and Rattray Community Council has reiterated an appeal for any local residents who would be interested in organising a Bonfire Night fireworks display for the town this year to get in touch.

The statutory organisation first called for volunteers to help organise a possible display back in May this year but so far no one has come forward.

The latest appeal has gone out on social media, while a letter has been sent from the community council to various businesses and organisations in the area looking for donations to help with the display.

In recent years, before the coronavirus pandemic, the fireworks display was accompanied by a bonfire in the car park at Davie Park.

However, the installation of the new 3G pitch nearby means that there are now concerns about possible damage to that surface from sparks from a bonfire and the idea for this year would be to hold a fireworks display only in the town centre, as happened last year.

The social media post on the community council’s Facebook page states: “Last year’s event had a fantastic turnout and we raised just over £300 from the collection cans on the night.

“However, these annual displays cost the community council over £3000 for a 10 minute display, and to run the event again this year we will be looking at a quieter display to reduce the noise. This will cost between £3000 and £5000.

“The community council do not have the funds to pay for this display and, due to it being a recurring event, funding is not available.

“We are looking for community feedback on the following: your opinion on whether the event should go ahead or not?

“Whether people would donate to the BRCC Paypal for this event to happen?

“Would you be interested in joining a group to run this event with the support of BRCC?”

One person has commented on the post: “Sorry we’ve no intention of helping to fund this event. Cost of living is difficult enough without this unnecessary display”.

And another added: “Sorry council don’t have money for display but neither do I and a lot more folk. Food prices, gas, electric etc. Hope some people are lucky enough to afford paying into the display.”

Anyone who wishes to have their say on whether the display should go ahead, and would like to volunteer to help organise it, should add their thoughts to the post on the BRCC Facebook.

Alternatively, send an email to sec@ brcommunitycouncil.org.uk by 5pm on Thursday this week, September 8, ahead of the next meeting of the community council.

Donations can be made by clicking on the link on the Facebook page.

BRCC meets on the second Thursday of each month in the BaRI Building at 53-55 High Street in Blairgowrie.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
