COUPAR ANGUS ABBEY CHURCH

Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Dr Hugh Ormiston.

Readings from Proverbs ch 1, vv 1-7, James ch 2, vv 1-7 and John ch 5, vv 30-40, were by David Chinn.

Mr Ormiston referred to the reading from John’s Gospel, stating that Jesus was addressing the Jewish religious leaders criticising them for studying the Scriptures in the belief that this would guarantee them ‘eternal life’ but not recognising the true messages contained in them.

Scriptures foretold the coming of Jesus, the Son of God, but the religious leaders were sceptical when they heard accounts of His healing powers and when they heard Him speaking, believing instead that He was blaspheming when claiming to be divine and sent by God.

The congregation was told that the real message from the Scriptures is about faith in God, concern for the poor and the need to love one another.

God has chosen “those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom He promised those who love Him”.

Mr Ormiston said that, as a result, God is the answer to the tragedies of life and people can help themselves by accepting Jesus into their lives to become ‘reborn’, leaving behind poor lifestyle choices they may have made in the past to start afresh living according to Jesus’ teachings.

Organist Alison Malcolm played ‘Toccata in Seven’ by John Rutter.
