Pride and praise for county team’s effort
Performance of young player Lewis is singled out
Perth and Kinross county golfers did themselves proud at the Area Team Championship Finals.
Held at Powfoot Golf Club in Dumfriesshire, the sixstrong squad advanced to the showdown match before being edged out by North East.
Steven Park, Ewan Farquharson, Lewis Seath, Glenn Campbell, Scott Michie and Kenny Macaskill all played their part in the run to the final.
County president Rab Baldie and secretary Alan Cargill travelled with the team to show their support.
Team captain Michie said: “First and foremost, we were delighted to come through a strong group earlier in the summer.
“We had managed to get a good half against Stirling, followed by a strong win against Clackmannanshire and then another against Glasgow.
“We went down to Powfoot to see what we could do. I knew the players who had been picked would suit the course. I’d played it quite a few times.
“I had been looking at everyone’s scores over the past few months with the finals in mind.
“The team selected had a
bit of experience, like myself and Glenn Campbell, down to some of the younger guys and I think there was a good blend. We didn’t want to be overly
confident.”
The final against North East was a close-run encounter, with many of the matches going down to the wire.
“We had played the North East a number of times before and we knew what they would be like,” Michie explained.
“They are a good, solid unit and have had a similar team for the last five or six years. Everybody played well and five of the six singles in the afternoon went up the last hole.”
While all team members came in for praise, the performance of young Muckhart member Seath was particularly impressive.
“We had a few missing but young Lewis Seath stepped in and was totally outstanding,” Michie said.
“It was his first cap for the senior men and he claimed four points from four.
“He is that young that he maybe didn’t know the guys he was coming up against in the other teams. There was no pressure on him to perform and no expectation on his shoulders.
“But hopefully we will have him for a few summers. He is a really down to earth lad.”
The Area Team Championships brought the curtain down on county trips this season but there is much to be optimistic about moving forward.
Michie concluded: “I sent all the guys who have represented the county a message earlier this week to thank them for all of their efforts. Everyone has come in and done a great job for us this year.”
