Nature recovery on agenda at conference

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

A conference billed as ‘Scotland’s rewilding event’ takes place in Perth this weekend.

The event, hosted by SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, will bring together a diverse group of people who share a commitment to nature recovery.

Perth Concert Hall will play host on Saturday, September 24, from 10am until 5.30pm.

Organisers note that rewilding – the restoration of the living systems on which we all depend – has captured the public imagination, “offering hope that we might reverse centuries of ecological decline.”

An event spokesperson continued: “Following COP26, there is now a heightened focus on nature recovery and this conference will deepen people’s understanding of rewilding as a naturebased solution to the challenges of climate breakdown and global nature loss.”

Featuring a high profile line up of speakers in a day of presentations and rewilding discussion, the conference is open to the public.

Speakers include Roy Dennis, the famous naturalist, who will look back on a career in which he pioneered the reintroduction of missing species, such as ospreys and white-tailed eagles.

Kate Macrae, renowned for her wildlife-friendly garden, will offer 10 easy steps for everyone to wild their own space.

Speaking about the conference, Peter Cairns, executive director of SCOTLAND: The Big Picture, said how pleased he was that the conference is returning this year and bringing together a diverse range of people with an interest in nature recovery.

He explained: “At a time when the impact of climate breakdown and global nature loss is becoming ever more apparent, the headline message from this event will be that rewilding is for everyone.

“We can all contribute to a nature-rich future, even the majority of us who live in and around towns and cities.”

The conference is supported by a number of sponsors.

These include Aviva, Rewilding Britain, Trees for Life, TreeStory and The Real Wild Estates Company.
