COUPAR ANGUS ABBEY CHURCH

Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Dr Hugh Ormiston.

Bible readings from Psalm 33, vv 16-22, Romans ch 5, vv 1-5 and Mark ch 1, vv 14-20, were read by Jo Chinn.

In his sermon Dr Ormiston referred to the words from Mark’s gospel: “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men”.

The congregation was told that these words were spoken by Jesus when He went into Galilee to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God.

He spoke to Simon and Andrew as they cast their nets into the lake.

The gospel of Mark states that they immediately left their nets and followed Jesus.

The disciples who followed were not great scholars but ordinary men who had to grow in faith, but there was a dominant feeling of hope.

Dr Ormiston then questioned whether hope is being eroded in life today.

However, faith brings hope and evolves into people’s ability to love.

The minister said that hope has the power to change lives, just as the life of Jesus was characterised by hope and this was a global power.

The apostles were encouraged to take the gospel out to other countries.

Dr Ormiston said that people sometimes wonder what chance Christianity has of surviving in the world today but that people shouldn’t worry as faith will endure and they have the tools to face the challenges.

Following the service organist Alison Malcolm played ‘Hornpipe from the Water Music’ by G F Handel.

The Abbey Church is going to start free soup lunches.

The first one is from noon until 2pm on Wednesday, October 5.
