COUPAR ANGUS ABBEY CHURCH

Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Dr Hugh Ormiston.

Following prayers, John Easson read from Psalm 18, Romans ch 1, vv 16 and 17 and Matthew ch 21, vv 33-46.

After singing the hymns, ‘Oh Lamb of God I Come’ and ‘Come Holy Spirit Come,’ interspersed by prayer, Rev Ormiston delivered his message.

The minister described the message Jesus was getting across in the third reading as an ‘allegory’ – a story defined in the Oxford dictionary as painting a picture where apparent meaning of the characters and events is used to symbolise a deeper moral or spiritual meaning.

The cornerstone referred to in Psalm 18 is Jesus and the message involves how to live.

At the end of the service, organist Alison Malcolm played the difficult piece by Eric Thiman, ‘No 8 Postlude’, in 18th century style.

The Abbey Church, on Dundee Road, is looking forward to welcoming people to soup lunches, which start on Wednesday, October 5, from noon to 2pm.

The new venture, launched and led by helpers Kathleen Godfrey and Ellen McGibbon, and helped by other church members providing the soups, is free and open to all.

Organisers have said it is hoped it will provide a chance for friendly conversation, as well as a nourishing lunch in difficult times.

The project follows on from the success of the now established Friendly Friday afternoon teas, held on the first Friday each month.

The next Friendly Friday is from 1.30pm to 3pm on Friday, October 7.

Bible study will resume on Wednesday, October 5, from 7pm in the church.

The opening session will look at the first letter of Peter.
