School goes extra mile for Macmillan

- CLARE DAMODARAN

Big-hearted pupils, staff and friends and family at Coupar Angus Primary School have raised more than £3000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and school funds.

The whole school took part in a Miles for Macmillan fundraising event on Friday, October 7, and also held a Macmillan coffee morning in the school hall on the same day.

There was also a book sale, a dress down day and fancy dress competition.

A total of £3008.82 was raised on the day, including £500 in matchfunding from the Bank of Scotland.

The day’s activities were organised by teacher Nicola Gourlay and the parent council, Support Our Children (SOC).

Miss Gourlay said: “It has been so lovely to have an event which can include the local community and it was great to be able to invite people into the school again.

“The kids absolutely loved taking part in the fun run and everyone made such a fantastic effort.”

Jake in the nursery raised an incredible £250, and the winners of the fancy dress competition were Leah from primary three, Ben in primary seven and Aaron in primary four, who all won Macmillan-themed water bottles made by Angie from the parent council.

Sharon Mearns is the chair of SOC.

She said: “It was lovely day and

great to see all the kids out running on the Common for the Macmillan Mile.

“The coffee morning was very busy too.

“Thanks to everyone for making it a wonderful day and helping to raise so much money for some very worthwhile causes.”

Macmillan aims to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can, by providing physical, financial and emotional support.

Money raised for the charity goes towards providing vital cancer services, research and campaigning to achieve better cancer care, and supporting the cancer workforce.
