COUPAR ANGUS ABBEY CHURCH

Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Dr Hugh Ormiston.

Joan Jones read the Bible lessons from 2 Kings ch 5, vv 1-3, 7-15 and then Luke ch 17, vv 11-19.

In his sermon, Dr Ormiston explained that the stories from the Old and New Testaments, although separated by hundreds of years, have many similarities.

They are both about the healing of people with leprosy.

In the reading from 2 Kings, Naaman is a commander in the Army and as such would have been quite rich and well to do, but he had leprosy.

However, it was a servant who had heard about the prophet Elisha performing many acts of healing who suggested that Naaman should visit him.

Despite some reservations Naaman was eventually cured when he showed faith in God via Elisha’s simple instructions to dip himself in the river Jordan.

Dr Ormiston said obedience to God begins with humility.

The minister went on to tell the congregation that the 10 lepers in Luke’s gospel were poor men ostracised by society because of their disease.

Jesus gave the simple instruction to go to the priest and they were healed on the way, but only one came back to thank Jesus.

He was a Samaritan. Jesus said: “Get up and go your Faith has made you well”.

Dr Ormiston said Jesus is the basis of faith and challenges people to go out and spread the word or, alternatively, invite others to come in to church and hear it for themselves.

The final hymn was very appropriate with the words: “Through the love of God our saviour, all will be well.”

Following the benediction organist Alison Malcolm played ‘March From Scipio’ by GF Handel.

Sunday’s service at the Abbey Church is at 11.15am, followed by teas and coffees.
