COUPAR ANGUS ABBEY CHURCH

Sunday’s service was conducted by Rev Dr Hugh Ormiston.

The Bible readings by Joan Jones were from Psalm 133, Revelation ch 1, vv 4-8, and John ch 18, vv 33-37.

For his sermon Dr Ormiston took as his text the words of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, who said: “What is truth?”

Dr Ormiston said that in the Church of Scotland people will study philosophy as well as theology.

The first sees people seek to understand

truths about themselves and the world they live in, while the second focuses on the nature of God and religious beliefs.

One field of philosophy is existentialism which emphasises that each person is responsible for creating their own purpose in life which is not given to them by any God or teacher. This is often associated with an atheist mindset.

Dr Ormiston said that the meeting between Pilate and Jesus was important.

The minister said: “Jesus answered that He was King of the Jews but his Kingdom was not of this world. He was born of this world to testify to the truth.

“Pilate took the unbiased objective decision to believe that Jesus was not guilty of any crime but under duress did not heed the truth.

“As Advent approaches people should be subjective and put Jesus at the centre of the celebration.”

Following the benediction organist Alison Malcolm played ‘Hifrydol’ from Three Preludes founded on Welsh hymn tunes by R Vaughan Williams.

Members looking to join the Abbey Church Christmas choir are asked to contact organist Alison Malcolm or the session clerk.
