AMERICA’S CUP HALL Of FAME INDUCTION CEREMONY

-

The Hall of Fame was founded in 1992 under the auspices of the Herreshoff Marine Museum by Halsey Herreshoff, a four-time America’s Cup defender and grandson of legendary yacht designer Nathanael Herreshoff. Nearly eighty legends of the Cup have been inducted into the Hall. Candidates eligible for consideration include members of the crew, designers, builders, syndicate leaders, supporters, chroniclers, and other individuals of merit. Each nominee is judged on the basis of outstanding ability, international recognition, character, performance, and contributions to the sport. The 22 members of the Selection Committee are persons intimate with the history

and traditions of America’s Cup and committed to the integrity of the Hall of Fame. The museum of the Hall of Fame is located on the grounds of the former Herreshoff Manufacturing Company of Bristol, Rhode Island, where yachts were built for eight consecutive America’s Cup defences between 1893 and 1934. Its collection includes plaques honouring the inductees; half-hull models of challengers and defenders; artefacts including spars, steering wheels, and tank test model hulls; and special exhibits about the America’s Cup. Since 1992, the induction ceremonies have all taken place in the USA, with few exceptions, 2001 Cowes, 2003 in Auckland, 2007 in Valencia and 2018 again in Cowes. This year, the induction ceremony with guests from all over the world took place for the very first time at Robbe & Berking Yachting Heritage Centre in Flensburg. At the same time, it is an international endorsement of the Centre, the important America’s Cup exhibition that is being staged there currently, as well as the activities of the 12-metre class in Flensburg and in the Baltic Sea. This year’s inductees in Flensburg were William Trenckle, Henri Racamier and Dyer Jones. All three are leaders who exemplify outstanding qualitites that the America’s Cup stands for. This induction ceremony delivered an unparalleled experience for attendees in a totally unique venue.
