Rugby

Over the past few months Keir Thomson, Alfie McKenzie, Joel Campbell and Christopher Lawson have been taking part in ongoing training sessions with the Borders and East Lothian Rugby Development Squad which take place at Netherdale and Tranent.

This weekend all four boys were involved in trials games at Musselburgh RFC against their Edinburgh counterparts and whilst the scores did not go their way they all played some great rugby. While the club season for 15s has come to an end the regional level rugby will continue and we hope to see the boys feature in future games over the next few months.

DNA profiling

S2 students were exploring the use of DNA profiling in science and we asked the question ‘should we use DNA profiling in the UK?’

Our students displayed excellent debating skills as well as the ability to listen to other people’s opinions and communicating their own.

Chemistry

Advanced Higher Chemistry are currently completing their projects as part of their course.

They each choose an area of chemistry and practical skills that interest them to investigate.

This year we have a big range of topics including caffeine in tea, preparation of aspirin and the bleaching of food dyes.

S1 are beginning to look at the pH scale and learning about different indicators for testing if a solution is acid, alkali or neutral. They have been using their iPads to record their practicals and compare the indicator colours. Red cabbage as an indicator gave us great colours but was much smellier than universal indicator.

CDT

The CDT department has been working with science to laser cut a set of Huygens’ rulers that enable Higher Physicists to investigate the effects of changing phase angle and/or wavelength on interference patterns, as a part of the waves topic. A lot of fun was had and understanding was gained from the activity.
