Applications open for General Election roles

- Isabelle Truscott Isabelle.Truscott@newsquest.co.uk

WITH a General Election expected to be called later this year, Scottish Borders Council (SBC) is seeking applications for election staff.

Applications are now open to people who are interested in the democratic process and who want to help the Returning Officer to delivery an accurate poll and count.

The jobs available are presiding officer, polling clerk, and count staff.

Polling stations would be open from 7am to 10pm, with polling staff expected to arrive at polling stations at 6.30am to set up equipment.

Staff are required to remain onsite until polling closes.

David Robertson, the returning officer, said: “While many council employees will be helping at the count, additional staff are required to help us ensure we deliver the Election in an efficient and effective way.

“We welcome applications from Borders residents who are keen to be part of the electoral process and would encourage them to apply in good time to ensure they can be considered for these important and meaningful roles.”

The count will then begin from 10pm on election day and will continue through the night.

Staff will remain in their post for the full duration of the count and will receive a fee.

Applicants will have their details inputted into the SBC staff election database.

Once a date for the General Election has been chosen applicants will be contacted to confirm their availability.

Successful candidates would then receive mandatory training.

By applying to any of the above positions candidates confirm that they have not been, and will not be, employed by, or directly assist in a campaign for, or on behalf of, a party or individual candidate, in or about the UK Parliament Election.

Applications can be submitted by completing the ‘Application to work at Election’ form on the SBC website.
