WORLD CHAMPS: WINNERS & LOSERS

-

BANGLADESH

Ruman Shana shot out of his skin, gaining his country's first ever archery Olympic qualifying spot and beating none other than Kim Woojin in open competition. He then took it all the way to a bronze medal, shooting superbly and nervelessly on the big stage. The man-of-the-match award, without question, and a triumph for his coach Martin Frederick.

INDIA

The men's team, anyway. In the face of chaotic administration and suspension of their national governing body, the men's team punched far above their weight with aggression and power and confidence to qualify three spots and make the finals stage.

GREAT BRITAIN

Pulled off some giant-killing feats with strong teamwork and confidence, and thoroughly deserved their six spots.

CHAD

Marlyse Hourtou, one of a small stable of African recurve archers training in Europe at the World Archery Excellence Centre, made the cut and shot well, and looks likely to qualify for Tokyo 2020.

GERMANY

Qualified a full women's team to the Olympics for the first time in twenty years and put a recurve archer into the final for the first time since 1997. (let's gloss over the men's team result, though).

KOREA

It's hard to see this competition as anything but a disaster for the world's leading archery nation. With multiple athletes in compound and recurve losing in matchplay, many questions will be asked back in Seoul.

TURKEY

Failed to convert their immense strides in recurve into Olympic places, and their compound men's team didn't have quite enough for gold – but the European Games beckons for a second chance.

SARA LOPEZ

The best female compound archer of all time unfortunately hit a mild slump in form just before the worlds, and will have to wait again for a chance at the biggest title of all for compound archers.

FRANCE

Did not manage to qualify a single place for either men or women. In a cruel twist, their top recurve woman Audrey Adiceom was in a four way shootout for three places on the Friday, but got beaten in both matches.

USA RECURVE

Brady was the highest of high points, and a careerclosing triumph for his coach Kisik Lee. But the failure to qualify either a men's or women's team points to deeper issues with USA recurve. Currently there will be just a single USA archer in Tokyo - and let's face it, it's probably going to be Brady.
