An San won her third gold medal and became the first athlete representing the Republic of Korea to win more than two gold medals at a single Summer Games. Korea have now won Olympic gold in the women's individual event at nine of the past 10 Olympics; the exception was the victory of Zhang Juanjuan of China at Beijing 2008.

Elena Osipova of the ROC took her second Olympic medal, after claiming silver in the women's team event. The Soviet Union, Russia, and the ROC combined have now won 11 Olympic medals in the modern era.

Lucilla Boari of Italy became the first Italian woman to win a medal in archery at the Olympic Games. Italy's eight other medals in archery were all won by men.
