TOKYO 2020: MEN'S INDIVIDUAL

-

Mete Gazoz won Turkey its first Olympic medal in archery. He also gave the country its first gold medal in any sport in Tokyo.

Mauro Nespoli of Italy claimed silver in the men's individual, a day after Lucilla Boari of Italy took bronze in the women's individual. Italy is the third European country to win a medal in both individual events in archery at a single Olympic Games, after Finland and the Soviet Union in 1980. It was his third Olympic medal after two Olympic medals in the men's team event (silver in 2008, gold in 2012).

Takaharu Furukawa of Japan won bronze. He took silver in this event in 2012. He became only the fourth archer to collect multiple medals in the event in the modern era, after Darrell Pace, Giancarlo Ferrari and Hiroshi Yamamoto, who took two medals an extraordinary 20 years apart in 1984 and 2004 (and even tried to make the Japanese team for this event.)

Furukawa became the first Japanese athlete to collect multiple medals in archery at a single Olympic Games, after claiming bronze in the team event too.
